The Prompt
Write a sonnet balancing light and dark in love, memory, or imagination.
This challenge is about duality. Love that glows and flickers. Memories that warm and ache. Imagination that lifts you up and leaves you wondering. You’re working in opposites: light and dark, hope and doubt, joy and shadow, and finding the balance between them.
The sonnet is a classic poetic form, often built from 14 lines with a clear rhyme scheme and a turn in thought or emotion around the ninth line. Whether you follow a traditional structure or take a modern approach, let the form support the feeling. Use the rhythm to guide the contrast.
Write like you’re holding both candle and smoke. Both dream and echo.
In order for your submission to qualify, it must be:
- A Sonnet (14 Lines)
- Submitted to the Poets community. Your story will be disqualified if it is submitted to any other community.
- Submitted before October 3, 2025 at 11:59 PM EST.
- Your work must be original and unpublished.
The Prizes
- 5 Winners: $200 each

A Transparent Look at Vocal Challenges and Top Stories
Almost three years ago, we shared a resource article that served as a place for people to suggest new challenge prompts. We thought it would be a good idea to refresh that thread, and take the opportunity to answer a few common questions about top stories, how challenges are judged and how submissions are reviewed.

A System That Isn’t Working Challenge Winners
Systems promise order. They organize behavior, distribute opportunity, and suggest that if everyone follows the rules, things will work. The entries in A System That Isn’t Working look closely at what happens when that promise begins to slip.
