About this challenge
The Prompt
Write a five-line poem about a sensory experience, where each line describes one of the five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.
This challenge kicks off our revisited series, where we revisit fan-favorite Vocal challenges with new twists.
In this revisited version of our original Sensational challenge, we're asking you to condense a world of sensory experience into just five lines—one line for each of the five senses. Whether it’s the warmth of morning coffee, the sound of laughter in a bustling park, or the scent of rain on pavement, we want you to take us there by engaging our senses in a precise, powerful way. The rules are simple, but the challenge lies in your word choices: you have just one line per sense to create a full, immersive experience.
Your poem must represent all 5 senses, which one line each dedicated to sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Each line should stand strong on its own, while also contributing to the overall sensory experience. Think of this as poetry in its most distilled form.
In order for your submission to qualify, it must be:
- Five lines. Your poem must represent all 5 senses, which one line each dedicated to sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.
- Submitted to Poets community. Choosing a community is a final step in the submission process. Your poem may be rejected for word count requirements if it is submitted to any other community.
The Prizes
- Grand Prize: $500
- Second Place: $200
- 10 Runners-Up: $20

A Transparent Look at Vocal Challenges and Top Stories
Almost three years ago, we shared a resource article that served as a place for people to suggest new challenge prompts. We thought it would be a good idea to refresh that thread, and take the opportunity to answer a few common questions about top stories, how challenges are judged and how submissions are reviewed.

A System That Isn’t Working Challenge Winners
Systems promise order. They organize behavior, distribute opportunity, and suggest that if everyone follows the rules, things will work. The entries in A System That Isn’t Working look closely at what happens when that promise begins to slip.
